Chapter Fourteen

I slept in the next morning with Rose curled into the crook of my arm. She knew better than to disturb me, under the circumstances.

I had a lot of work to do, so I was looking forward to a quiet day when I could get some of it done. For starters, there were Spooky Times articles about the Case of the Murdered TV host that I needed to catch up on; the Times always had some tidbit that no one else did, so I read the articles greedily.

Reading the paper reminded me of something else, which was Peter and his secrecy. I had been so busy with one crisis after another that I hadn’t had a chance to go and ask him what was going on Down Below.

And even now I couldn’t say when I’d get a chance. Jezebel had asked for a meeting, and that was a high priority. She had been speaking with my mom, but apparently that wasn’t good enough. She wanted to talk to me directly.

I worked hard all morning, then caught a break in the afternoon when Grant got in touch! He said he’d be home that evening, and did I want to come to the cottage for dinner? In fact, he was hoping I’d make dinner, since he wouldn’t be there early enough to plan it.

I tipped over my water glass in my excitement at being able to tell him yes. I only hoped Audrey wouldn’t mind sharing some of her kitchen stores, since I didn’t have time to go grocery shopping.

With dinner to look forward to, I redoubled my efforts to get caught up on my work. The item I most urgently wanted to get done before dinner was to go and have another chat with Kip. I had seen him only that one time, and I needed to know a couple of things. Plus, I just wanted to check in and be supportive.

Paperwork and other office tasks finished at last, I nearly tripped over an outstretched wooden cane as I hurried out of my office.

“Cookie!” I cried out. “You did that on purpose.”

“I won’t confirm or deny it,” she said, jutting out her already beaked chin at me.

“What is it?” I asked.

“I’m going with you to see Kip,” she informed me.

“How’d you know that’s what I was about to do?” I asked, utterly flabbergasted that she always managed to know what was going on, even when we deliberately didn’t tell her.

“Of course you’re going. I’m old, not senile,” she said.

“That’s not an answer,” I shot back.

“It is the way I said it,” said Cookie, utterly unrelenting.

When we reached the jail the guard eyed me, but when he saw Cookie he quickly stepped out of the way.

We found Kip lying on his bunk, staring at the ceiling.

“Hey,” I said.

“Don’t look so mopey,” said Cookie, stumping in.

Kip shrugged. “I’m never getting out of here.”

“We’re getting you out,” I assured him.

He nodded but didn’t look convinced. “Any news on the case?” he asked hopefully.
